Research Interests

Dr. Smith’s research uses stable isotope methods to study human protein and fat metabolism in vivo. Specifically, his recent research has focused on i) investigating sex differences in protein metabolism in young and older adults; ii) comparing and contrasting different methodologies used to measure rates of muscle protein synthesis; iii) examining the anabolic effects of nutritional, pharmaceutical and exercise interventions in older adults; and iv) determining the effect of acute changes in energy balance induced through changes in energy intake and/or energy expenditure on triglyceride rich lipoprotein metabolism.
