Research Interests

Dr. David Carr is very active in research on older adult drivers and drivers with medical illnesses. He participates in a St. Louis consortium of clinicians and researchers that have interest in older drivers. Collaborators include Dr. Peggy Barco WUSM, Dr. Cathy Roe WUSM, Dr. Annie Harmon WUSM, Ms. Annie Johnson WUSM, Dr. Thomas Meuser, UMSL; Dr. Marla Berg-Weger, SLU; and Ms. Pat Niewoehner, VA at Jefferson Barracks. Together, this group has had success with funding efforts through the NIH, AAA Foundation to study medical fitness-to-drive, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the Longer Life Foundation to study medical fitness-to-drive. A driving evaluation clinic was initiated with collaboration from the Program of Occupational Therapy in the WU School of Medicine and HealthSouth, and operates at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis. Future efforts include developing a consortium of Occupational Therapists that specialize in driving assessments in the State of Missouri, exploring issues of loss of mobility in spinal cord injuries and frailty, and intervention trials to improve driving skills in patients with stroke and brain injury.
