Research Interests

Dr. Jacome-Sosa’s research is focused on the regulation of nutrient metabolism in people with obesity. Her goal is to develop effective nutrition-based lifestyle interventions to prevent and treat metabolic dysfunction and disease, particularly in the Hispanic/Latino population, and understand the mechanisms underlying metabolic complications of obesity.  Her current research interests incorporate translational and clinical approaches to 1) determine whether phenotypic differences in lower body (gluteofemoral) fat mass with obesity are related to changes in tissue generation of profibrotic-proinflammatory cells resulting in tissue fibrosis and inflammation, which can lead to systemic insulin resistance, 2) compare the transcriptomic signature of the skeletal muscle and adipose tissue in response to mixed meal ingestion before and after either calorie restriction-induced or bariatric surgery-induced weight loss in people with obesity, and 3) evaluate the efficacy of a behavioral, plant-based dietary intervention in improving metabolic health and its acceptance in the Latino population.
